City-by-City EV Charging in Turkey: Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa

As the number of electric vehicles grows, one of the most frequent questions is: how do I solve charging in my own city? Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bursa are among the provinces with the most electric vehicles and the greatest charging demand in Turkey. In this guide, we explain what to keep in mind on the home and workplace side for these four cities, how to choose the right AC charger, and the advantages of domestic production.

The basic logic of in-city charging: daily charging happens at home or at work

Public DC fast charging stations are ideal for long journeys, but for daily use the most economical and practical method is to charge with an AC wall-mounted (wallbox) unit where you park your car — at home or at work. Slow, safe overnight charging means a full car in the morning; searching for stations and waiting in queues disappears. That is why, whatever the city, the first step is to install an AC charging point in your own car park.

Istanbul

Istanbul is the city with the highest electric vehicle density in Turkey. Because of the abundance of apartment and residential-complex car parks, the most common need is to install an individual or management-approved charging point in a shared car park. When the electrical infrastructure and billing (OCPP-based load management) are discussed with the site management, installation proceeds smoothly.

Ankara

In Ankara, detached and villa-type homes are common, as are large workplace and campus car parks. In a detached car park, a 7.4–22 kW AC wallbox can be installed directly; in workplace and public campuses, multi-unit installations and remote monitoring come to the fore.

Izmir

In Izmir, residential-complex car parks and commercial facilities (hotels, shopping malls, business plazas) are increasing demand for charging points. Because of coastal and humid conditions, choosing a device with an IP65/IP66 protection class ensures a long service life in outdoor installations.

Bursa

Bursa is an EV city growing rapidly on both the industrial and residential sides. Because our production center is in Bursa, it is the city where you gain the fastest access to devices, installation support and spare parts. For details specific to Bursa, take a look at our Bursa EV charging page.

Which device should I choose?

  • For home: single car, overnight charging → a 7.4–11 kW AC wallbox is enough for most uses.
  • If you have a three-phase installation: faster charging is possible at 22 kW.
  • Residential complexes and workplaces: multi-unit installation + OCPP load management + user-based billing.
  • Outdoors: an IP65/IP66 protection class and a robust enclosure are essential.

Regardless of the city, you can find the detailed criteria for choosing the right device in our separate guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

In which city is electric vehicle charging easiest?

In fact, the city does not matter: the easiest and most economical method is to install an AC wall-mounted wallbox where you park your car (home or workplace). Slow, safe overnight charging means a full car in the morning; searching for stations and waiting in queues disappears. Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bursa are among the provinces with the highest electric vehicle density in Turkey, and both individual and corporate installations are common in these cities. Public DC fast charging is mainly for long journeys and is not the solution for daily use.

Can I install a charging station in my residential complex or apartment building?

Yes. Shared car parks of apartments and residential complexes are the most common installation need, especially in dense cities like Istanbul. With the approval of the site management and a suitable electrical infrastructure, an individual or management-approved charging point can be installed. OCPP-based load management is important here: it shares the existing electrical capacity efficiently among the devices and enables user-based billing, so that how much each person charges can be calculated separately. When the infrastructure and billing are discussed with the site management from the outset, installation proceeds smoothly.

Why is installation in Bursa advantageous?

Bursa is an EV city growing rapidly on both the industrial and residential sides. Because Bemis E-V Charge's production center is in Bursa, it is the city where you gain the fastest access to devices, installation support and spare parts. Being in the same city as the manufacturer saves time during technical support and commissioning. Sourcing directly from the manufacturer also means a more favorable price without reseller and import margins. What kW rating charger should I use at home?

For most home users, a 7.4–11 kW AC wallbox is more than sufficient in a single-car, overnight-charging scenario; the car is full by morning. Faster charging is possible with the higher 22 kW rating, but this requires your installation to be three-phase. In suitable car parks such as Ankara's detached and villa-type homes, a wallbox can be installed directly. On the residential-complex and workplace side, what matters is not so much the power of a single device but OCPP load management and user-based billing. Choosing more power than you need creates unnecessary infrastructure cost.

Which charger is suitable for a coastal or humid area?

In places with coastal and high-humidity conditions such as Izmir, it is important that a device installed outdoors has a high protection class against dust and water. In these cases, IP65/IP66 protection class devices should be preferred; cheap devices with low protection have a short service life outdoors. Bemis E-V Charge devices feature outdoor-ready enclosures in the IP65/IP66 protection class, and therefore provide a long service life in humid and open-area installations. The same preference for a robust enclosure applies to residential-complex car parks and commercial facilities such as hotels, shopping malls and business plazas.
